John William Daly was selected as the 1997 ASP Research Achievement Award winner, and addressed the Annual Meeting in Iowa City, where he received the award. Dr. Daly was the Chief of the Laboratory of Bioorganic Chemistry at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
John was born in Portland, Oregon and received both his B.S. (Biochemistry, 1954) and his M.S. (Organic Chemistry, 1955) degrees from the Oregon State University. His Ph.D. degree in Organic Chemistry was completed in 1958 at Stanford University.
Dr. Daly began his career at the United States Public Health Service at the NIH. He rose through the ranks at the NIH to his current position. John is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and the University of Maryland School of Medicine and is a Research Associate in the Department of Herpetology at the American Museum of Natural History.
John's research interests include the structure elucidation and pharmacology of alkaloids and other natural products. He has interest in the structure-activity relationships for many of the chemical mediators in the human body and the mechanism of actions of the xanthines. He also has interest in biogenic amines anddrug metabolism. He is interested in the functional relationships among cyclic nucleotides, ion channels and phospholipid metabolism.
Dr. Daly holds memberships in numerous scientific organizations and is on the editorial board of the Journals; Molecular Pharmacology, Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology, and Toxicon.
John has receive numerous honors including (in 1996) the Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Biological Sciences (Washington Academy of Sciences), the Outstanding Performance Award (Senior Executive Service, HHS), and the Japanese Society Fellowship for the Promotion of Science.
Dr. Daly has published nearly 500 research articles, numerous reviews and book chapters. He holds six patents and one monograph. He has delivered numerous invited and plenary lectures at National and International Scientific Meetings over his career.
